Never under estimate the powers of SketchUp!

This isn't a tip or trick, but I had to post on this one. I know that I always talk about modeling in SketchUp and rendering in Max. Well Jacques from Cape Town, South Africa has proved that SketchUp can compete as a high-end 3D modeling contender. His stunning care for detail has been shown in his latest model of the HMCS Snowberry. The slideshow is also a good documentation of just how he managed to model organics in an XYZ world.




The images were modeled in SketchUp and rendered with Vray.

He has also been gracious enough to provide his models here for SU enthusiasts.

  4. @Ramy. I'm really excited about your plea to model in SU and render in Max. I agree that combining the strenghts of both programs is the way to go. Unfortunately I'm only able to use Max8.
    Question: When you've tweaked your materials in Max (eg for textures) and you want to change something about your geometry, which you would do in SU. How do you make sure you don't have tweak all over again when you import the new file??

  5. That's a good question. It depends on the complexity of the model. If it's simple, then I'll do the modeling changes in max. But if it's a total redesign. Then I'll go back to SU.

    I think I found another way to it...you could also import the geometry you changed and combine it with the 'tweaked and ready to go' max file, right? Then you would only have to re-assign materials to the changed geometry...tweaked materials that is. This would take some smart exporting but since max imports everything with the same origin there won't be too much trouble. Hmmm...I like.
